at least he admits he's in Nigeria

Hi Georgey,

I'm sorry it's taken me so long to get back to you. I have been out of the country, filming my latest project. I got home late Saturday night and just opened up my inbox. What a nice surprise to come home to. I could really use this money to finance my next project.

Tell me, have you heard of Adrienne Populi?

Sincerely,
Adrienne

DEAR FRIEND,

NOTE: PLEASE REPLY ONLY TO MY SECURITY E-MAIL ADDRESS

I AM MR GEORGE EZE, THE BILLS AND EXCHANGE DIRECTOR AT THE FOREIGN EXCHANGE DEPARTMENT OF ECO BANK I AM WRITING THIS LETTER TO SOLICIT FOR SUPPORT AND ASSISTANCE FROM YOU TO CARY OUT THIS BUSINESS OPPORTUNITY IN MY DEPARTMENT.

LYING IN AN INACTIVE ACCOUNT IS THE SUM OF $21 MILLION USD BELONGING TO A FOREIGN CUSTOMER WHO HAPPENS TO BE DECEASED. HE DIED WITH HIS WIFE AND TWO CHILDREN IN A PLANE CRASH ON BOARDING AN ADC AIRLINE FLIGHT AT THE EGIRIN RIVER-LAGOS NIGERIA IN NOVEMBER 1997.

EVER SINCE HE DIED THE BANK HAS BEEN EXPECTING HIS NEXT OF KIN TO COME AND CLAIM THESE FUNDS. TO THIS EFFECT WE CAN NOT RELEASE THE MONEY UNLESS SOMEONE APPLIES FOR IT AS NEXT OF KIN, AS INDICATED IN OUR BANKING GUIDE LINE.

UNFORTUNATELY HE HAS NO FAMILY MEMBERS IN NIGERIA OR ANYWHERE WHO IS AWARE OF THE EXISTENCE OF THE MONEY (AS HE WAS A CONTRACTOR WITH THE FEDERAL REPUBLIC OF NIGERIA) AT THIS JUNCTURE I HAVE DECIDED TO DO BUSINESS WITH YOU IN COLLABORATION WITH TWO OTHER OFFICIALS IN THE BANK, TO THIS EFFECT WE SOLICIT YOUR HELP IN APPLYING AS THE NEXT OF KIN THEN THE MONEY WILL BE RELEASED INTO YOUR ACCOUNT.

WE DO NOT WANT THIS MONEY TO GO INTO THE BANK'S TREASURY AS AN UNCLAIMED BILL. THE BANKING LAW AND GUIDE LINE STIPULATES THAT: IF SUCH MONEY(S) REMAINS UNCLAIMED FOR A PERIOD OF OVER SEVEN YEARS (7 YEARS) THE MONEY WILL BE TRANSFERRED IN TO THE BANKS TREASURY AS UNCLAIMED FUNDS OUR REQUEST FOR A FOREIGNER AS NEXT OF KIN IS OCCASIONED BY THE FACT THAT THE CUSTOMER WAS A FOREIGNER AND A NIGERIAN CANNOT STAND AS NEXT OF KIN.

30 PERCENT OF THE MONEY WILL BE YOUR SHARE AS FOREIGN PARTNER. THEREAFTER MY COLLEAGUES AND I WILL VISIT YOUR COUNTRY WITH YOUR HELP ONCE THE MONEY HITS YOUR ACCOUNT FOR DISBURSEMENT ACCORDING TO THE AGREED SHARING PARTTERN OF 30 FOR YOU,10% FOR INCIDENTAL EXPENSES BOTH LOCAL AND INTERNATIONAL AND 60% FOR MY GROUP YOUR URGENT RESPONSE IS BEIGN EXPECTED. KINDLY SEND YOUR REPLY TO: georgeeze2007@yahoo.co.uk

THANKS AND BEST REGARDS,
YOURS FAITHFULLY,
GEORGE EZE

In reply to my email, Hassan tells me that he's uncovered some more information.

Tell them you have to pay your broker (aka, me) a fee of 10%, so they need to up your share in the profits.

free email acounts

Dear Hassan,

That's one thing that's annoying -- these guys write on "free email accounts" and then expect us to believe them. If you ask for their official email address, they'll hem and haw and tell you that they can't give you that. Why, if it's supposedly perfectly legal?

Sounds so convincing, doesn't it. To think this guy is indeed the Governor of the Nigerian Central Bank, if he does know anything about this. I am trying to see if he has an official mailbox that he can be notified of this if he doesn't know he is being used.

Warm wishes,
Hassan

why would a bank have a governor?

It is understood that the undersigned will not be committed to make any payments for any expenses or to fulfill any obligations arising thereof, which should be clearly stated in the letter.

Your mail was received in regards to your inherited funds delivery project as contained in my letter to you. As you may rightly want to know, the funds in question belongs to the late Ahmed Al-Haifi and from the records here in the next of kins file, we have your name as " Hassan M. Al-Haifi " and email contact as the legally recognized next of kin to the late man hence my first letter to you and the amount involve is USD 20,000,000.00. I am shock to my born marrow that you don't have an idea of the funds or were you trying yo pull my leggs?. However, for us to get things legally put in place for the hitch free delivery of these funds, you are required to send immediately the requested information as contained in my first letter to you which includes [1] your direct telephone number,(CELL) [2] your secured postal mailing address[3] the name of the international airport closest to you and [4] any identification document of your person. It is imperative I inform you also that these documents, after procurement, will be insured with the National Insurance Corporation Nigerian (NICON) as required by law. You will have to understand that for the diplomat to make this delivery, it has to conform with the International Monetary laws which means that all legal documentations must be in place so that on request you will have no problems proving the source of the funds as being legitimate. This is a safeguard against any seizure of the funds by the authorities concerned as they are wont to do if it came without proper and legal documentations.

You will have to confirm receipt of this mail to enable us continue with this arrangement. I will await for you to send the requested information today and also your telephone call. You are to complete the attached delivery form and return immediately via email attachment. This is a request from the protocol department.

FOR YOUR URGENT ATTENTION!

SUBJECT: YOUR FUNDS TRANSFER/DELIVERY.

THIS INTERVENTION IS AS A RESULT OF NUMEROUS APPLICATIONS AND ATTEMPTS BY SOME GROUP OF PEOPLE HERE AND OTHER PARTS OF THE WORLD TO ABUSE THE INTERGRITY AND REPUTATION OF OUR APEX BANK, THE CENTRAL BANK OF NIGERIA.

HOWEVER, IN ORDER FOR THE BANK TO PROTECT HER IMAGE AND THAT OF THE MINISTRY OF FINANCE, THE MINISTER OF FINANCE AND THE GOVERNOR OF (CBN) HAS BEEN MANDATED TO INFORM YOU THAT WE ARE IN RECEIPT OF AN APPLICATION FOR FUND RELEASE/DELIVERY TO YOU.

FURTHERMORE, BE INFORMED THAT COMMERCIAL BANKS IN THIS COUNTRY, INCLUDING OTHER OFFSHORE FINANCIAL INSTITUTIONS WHO CLAIM TO HAVE THE MANDATE OF THE CENTRAL BANK OF NIGERIA TO TRANSFER FUNDS TO HER BENEFICIARIES ARE NOT AUTHORISED TO TRANSFER ABOVE ONE MILLION, FIVE HUNDRED THOUSAND DOLLARS OUT OF THIS COUNTRY WITHOUT DUE CLEARANCE FROM MY OFFICE IN THE CENTRAL BANK OF NIGERIA. SO IF EVENTUALLY YOU ARE IN CONTACT WITH SUCH GROUP OF PEOPLE YOU BETTER STOP FURTHER COMMUNICATION FOR YOUR OWN INTEREST. ALSO, TO ACCOMPLISH THE ABOVE, I HAVE STARTED UPDATING YOUR FILE/APPLICATION FOR THE RELEASE/DELIVERY OF YOUR FUND TO YOU WHICH WAS EARNED THROUGH INHERITANCE/CONTRACT PAYMENT. MY OFFICE IS WORKING ON THE INSTRUCTION FROM THE PRESIDENCY, FEDERAL EXCUTIVE COUNCIL, AND THE NATIONAL COMMITTEE FOR BANKERS FORUM THROUGH MY OFFICE TO DELIVER THE FUNDS IN CASH DIRECTLY TO YOUR DOORSTEP BY DIPLOMATIC MEANS. THE MONEY WILL BE CONCEALED IN TWO METAL BOXES AND WILL BE LABELED AS PERSONAL BELONGINGS SO AS TO OBTAIN FULL DIPLOMATIC IMMUNITY COVERAGE TO ENSURE A HITCH-FREE DELIVERY. THIS ARRANGMENT IS BEING IMPLEMENTED IN ORDER TO BEAT THE ACTIVITIES OF FRAUDSTERS. I SYMPATHISE WITH YOU FOR THE LONG DELAY IN RECEIVING YOUR MONEY
DUE TO YOUR INABILITY TO LOCATE THE PROPER INSTITUTION RESPONSIBLE FOR SUCH SERVICES IN THIS COUNTRY.

THE MODE OF OUR OPERATION IS AS FOLLOWS:-

1. YOU ARE TO INFORM THIS OFFICE THE NAME OF YOUR NEAREST INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT TO ENABLE US ENROUTE THE DIPLOMATIC TICKET CORRECTLY AND ALSO MAIL US THE FIRST AND SECOND PAGES OF YOUR INTERNATIONAL PASSPORT OR ANY OTHER IDENTIFICATION AS WE SHALL FORWARD TO YOU THE DIPLOMAT'S PASSPORT TO ENABLE YOU IDENTIFY HIM ON HIS ARRIVAL.

2. YOUR PRESENCE WILL ALSO BE NEEDED AT THE AIRPORT TO RECEIVE THE DIPLOMAT ON ARRIVAL SO THAT BOTH OF YOU WILL MOVE STRAIGHT TO YOUR NOMINATED BANK TO LODGE THE FUND INTO YOUR ACCOUNT. ALSO YOU WILL BE REQUIRED TO ENDORSE CERTAIN VITAL DOCUMENTS CONFIRMING THE INTACT RECEIPT OF YOUR FUNDS, AS THIS WILL ENABLE US TO WRITE REPORTS BACK TO THE OFFICES INVOLVED IN PASSING THE BILL THAT HAS RESULTED IN YOUR BEING PAID. MY OFFICIAL I.D SHALL BE SENT TO YOU FOR DOUBLE ASSURANCE OF THE SOURCE OF THIS LETTER.

FINALLY, UPON CONFIRMATION OF YOUR READINESS TO RECEIVE YOUR MONEY, WE SHALL AS SOON AS POSSIBLE START PROCESSING THE NECCESSARY DOCUMENTATIONS TOWARDS THE SAFE DELIVERY OF THE CONSIGNMENT TO YOU IN YOUR COUNTRY AND THE KEYS OF THE BOXES SHALL ALSO BE SENT TO YOU VIA COURIER SERVICE.

I hope I get this job!

Hello,

Thank you for the email about the job opening. I have several recommendations that will help your company.

My first job as your manager will be to require a high school education for all employees. Proper grammar and punctuation are critical in this high-paced world of technology and communication.

In addition, I recommend coldcalling potential employees, instead of trying to reach them by email. Many people are wary of job offers that come by email and are much more apt to accept a job offer made over the phone.

Sincerely,
Adrienne Populi

My name is Mark Birman I'm job manager in RuAmerica corporation. We're searching for new partnerships in continental USA.

Let me say few words about our company. We're working for several years worldwide, providing the best service in Shipping and Transporting. We work with European countries for 4 years. Our partners are USPS, FedEx, DHL, Ebay, Amazon and many other shipping companies and shops. We're providing financial services too.

Let me say about the position we offer. It is called Correspondence Assistant/Representative. It is new position for us, and it is very valuable now. In August 2003, many European countries changes their rules for customs and taxes for merchandise, sent from countries, that don't belong to EU. This means, that package that is sent from a company - will be a subject for VAT in Europe, but the package that is sent from a person - doesn't have VAT. Because of that, prices for shipping services grow, and we try to reduce them. And we need YOU.

Your task - to receive packages that will be delivered to you, and redirect them, following our instructions. Packages will be delivered by courriers to your location. Then you will be given money for shipping fees. Your fee is 35 USD per package you receive. No start up fees! No out of pocket fees! Nothing to pay!

IMPORTANT. We put names of our customers on the packages, so names will be different from yours.

We will inform you about incoming packages. We pay you via PayPal, wire transfer, Check, Money Order or Western Union. Your commissions will be paid every two weeks. We will make agreement which you will sign and return back to us. In this document all responsibilities and duties will be conrirmed. If you are interested in this offer, or have more questions please fill application form.

Thank you for your time.

an email from a fan

Hello,
They're all hoaxes. The main way you can tell if they are real or not is if you make up a fake email account (like I did) and reply to them only from there. They don't care what address it comes from, as long as they get a reply and they can sucker someone.
One interesting thing to note -- I am getting the same emails from "different" people. The one time I pointed that out to one of the scammers, I was brushed off. In the meantime, it's quite fun to reply, as the emails are annoying.
Besides...wouldn't you know if it was a relative of yours?

Take care,
Adrienne
